Paul Bullen, Director of Delivery at Northamptonshire Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), spoke to us about some of their innovative work on mental health.

Local research on the experiences of people with mental health concerns who come into contact with the police and criminal justice system (CJS), resulted in a report with several recommendations. Paul provided two tangible examples of changes to practice as a result of this work.

We spoke with Amit Sethi, EU Head of Operations at SCRAM Systems, who provided an overview of his work and the rollout of the Alcohol Abstinence Monitoring Requirement (AAMR) across England and Wales. 

Sam Sanderson, Project Manager at Sussex Criminal Justice Board (SCJB) and Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), told us about their Whole Systems Approach (WSA) project focusing on women in the Criminal Justice System (CJS).

We spoke with police officer Paul Jukes about this innovative scheme that aims to provide early intervention support to young people in Cheshire.

We spoke to Claire Jones – Assistant Chief Probation Officer at Kent, Surrey and Sussex CRC – about the work they are doing with women. Whilst she acknowledged that their work concerning women “isn’t necessarily ground-breaking”, she said it was very much needed.

We spoke with Anita Lord, a VAWG Development Worker with the Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), to find out more about this work. She told us that these projects are all part of a wider push to address the needs of those affected by domestic and/or sexual violence.

We spoke with Inspector Steve Baker, Mental Health and Street Triage lead at Northumbria Police, about two projects, RESPOND and the Street Triage Service, that aim to improve the way the police and other agencies respond to individuals with mental health issues.

The Alcohol Diversion Scheme was launched in June 2018 and ran until 2020. After its successful implementation, it was rebranded as the Alcohol Education Course and has been operational since 2021. Nicola Malson-Ricketts (Out of Court Disposals Manager, Gwent Police), provided an overview of the alcohol education course running in Gwent, South Wales, and North Wales.
