Expert voices: Respect orders and tackling anti-social behaviour
Join us on the 30th January from 12:30- 13:30 for the next of our online 'Expert Voices' events, looking at ways to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Anti-social behaviour often can causes victims alarm and distress and makes our communities feel less safe and secure. Successive governments since the 1990s have attempted to tackle the causes of anti-social behaviour, while also using new legislative powers to try to deter and change the conduct of those who cause it, such as Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) and the current civil injunctions and criminal behaviour orders. But these powers have often struggled to effectively address the issue – victims continue to feel let down, research suggests that these powers are often unfairly criminalise children and are disproportionately used against other vulnerable groups, and practitioners can often feel like they are given new powers without the resources required to use them. As the Government announces new “respect orders” to address the issue, we take a look at policy approaches to anti-social behaviour: the powers, their pitfalls and the alternatives.
Sign up here to hear our expert panel discuss approaches to anti-social behaviour. Joining us are:
· Andrea Fraser, a Civil Justice Lawyer at JUSTICE with considerable experience looking at behavioural control orders;
· Anna Coffey, co-CEO of High Trees, a community centre and charity in South London;
· A speaker from the police (to be confirmed).
The event will be chaired by the Centre’s Director, Phil Bowen, who will also lead a Q&A session at the end.
