Expert voices: court responses to violence against women and girls
Join us on the 26th March from 14:00- 15:00 for the next of our online 'Expert Voices' events, looking at court responses to VAWG.
Given the Government’s commitment to halve violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the next decade, and the interest that they have shown in improving court responses as part of a wider strategy, for our next Expert Voices event we will delve into court responses as an evidence-backed intervention to tackle VAWG. Join us as we share examples of good practice, look to the evidence and research available in this area, and think about some of the challenges these interventions pose.
We are delighted to be joined by experts in the field, including Karen Senogles, Specialist Domestic Abuse Courts (SDAC) mapping lead and criminal justice programme manager at Standing Together, and Andrea Campos-Vigouroux, Policy and Strategy Lead to the Angiolini Inquiry and researcher who has explored how areas in Australia, Canada and the USA use specialist court models to respond to domestic abuse.

Expert voices: women's experiences of attending court
Join us on the 22nd April from 12:30- 13:30 for the next of our online 'Expert Voices' events, looking at women's experiences of attending court.
There is growing recognition of the detrimental impact that contact with the criminal justice system, particularly custodial sentences, disproportionately has on women and their children, and just this month this has been reflected in the Sentencing Council's newly revised 'Imposition of Community and Custodial Sentences'. But while this progress is obviously very welcomed, one related area often overlooked and under-researched is how contact with our criminal court system impacts women- something that can both dramatically impact a woman's life, and her perception generally of the criminal justice system as a whole. Join us for this event in our Expert Voices series, where we will be exploring just that. We are thrilled to be joined by experts:
- Katy Swaine Williams, Associate of the Centre and a freelance research and policy consultant specialising in criminal justice reform for women and children accused or convicted of offending;
- Lucy Slade, our Policy Officer who has recently undertaken research exploring how women with caring responsibilities experience the criminal court system; and
Anna Watchman, our current intern and soon to be researcher, who is researching women’s experience of Highbury Magistrates’ Court.
