Child-centred policing
Children who come into contact with the police often do so in the context of vulnerability, trauma and unmet need. We work closely with police to advance child-centred policing that recognises children first and foremost as children. This means supporting policing responses that are proportionate, developmentally appropriate and rooted in safeguarding, with the child’s voice at the centre.
We bring evidence on child development and trauma into policing practice, promoting early intervention and diversion, and challenging approaches that lead to unnecessary criminalisation and disproportionate outcomes. Through constructive challenge, collaboration and shared learning, we aim to strengthen child-centred practice, reduce harm, improve outcomes for children, and build trust between police and children, their families and communities.
