Part of our Child-centred policing toolkit, this section provides evidence and best practice on avoiding adultification of children. This, and recognising children as children, sits within the Your Trust and Your Future NPCC child centred policing pillars.
Child-centred policing toolkit
This toolkit brings together evidence, guidance and practical tools to help embed child-centred approaches in everyday policing. Covering key areas including adultification, effective communication, diversion and police protection, it aims to support all levels of policing and multi-agency partners to embed this at the strategic level, and in particular support frontline practitioners to better understand children’s needs, reduce harm and deliver responses that put the child’s voice and best interests at the centre.
The toolkit supports working within the three child centred policing pillars- Your Trust, Your Voice & Your Future- as set out in the National Police Chiefs Council's (NPCC) Children and Young Persons Policing Strategy 2024-2027 and Children and Young Persons Policing Charter 2025, and should be read in conjunction with these resources.
We plan to update this toolkit regularly, keeping the key areas up to date and adding new ones. If you have any ideas, please contact us.
