Welsh Government is exploring how problem-solving approaches in public law proceedings could help reduce the number of children in care in Wales.
In January 2026, the Centre for Justice Innovation helped deliver three online workshops, one in each Local Family Justice Board region, with over 60 professionals from across the family justice system and community partners.
Participants saw clear potential in a Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) problem-solving approach to make court less adversarial, improve multi-agency working and reduce repeat care proceedings. They also raised concerns about funding, workforce capacity and regional variation, and called for a flexible model that builds on existing good practice.
This briefing sets out the key themes, regional findings and 10 recommendations for next steps. It is available in English and Welsh.
