“Where the hell am I going to get that money from?”: Online report launch
Online – 16th May 2024 –12.30-14.00
Join us for the online launch of our new research exploring the impact of court fines on people on low-incomes. It is an opportunity to hear about the main findings from the research team, insights from a person with lived experience of being fined, who will tell their story about the impact it had on their financial and mental wellbeing, and from experts in the field, Damon Gibbons, Chief Executive, Centre for Responsible Credit and a representative of the Magistrates Association. The Centre’s Director, Phil Bowen, will chair a Q&A with this panel of experts to discuss the themes raised in the report.

Expert Voices: Presumption against short sentences for children
Online – 7th May 2024 – 12.30-13.30
Join us for the next of our Expert Voices events, co-produced with the Alliance for Youth Justice (AYJ).
With proposals currently before Parliament to introduce a presumption against short prison sentences for adults in England and Wales as part of the Sentencing Bill, and many in the sector arguing that this should be extended to cover children, we are hosting an online discussion on the implications of the Bill, and the wider opportunity it presents to ensure that custody is used as a last resort for children. We are delighted to be joined by three experts, Dr Anne-Marie Day, Keele University, Richard Goodacre, chair of Youth Court Committee (YCC), Magistrates Association, and Laura Cooper, Director of the Youth Justice Legal Centre. The event will be chaired by our director, Phil Bowen, and will include a Q&A session.
