SIR – The new Justice Secretary, Michael Gove, is right to point out that our justice system can and should be better.

It is a refreshing change to hear a Lord Chancellor highlight how confusing and slow our court processes are for victims, witnesses and defendants. Many people working in courts are also frustrated by the reality of how successive government policies have translated into practice.

New technology can certainly help to make the system more efficient, in order to make it effective. But it is just as important to stress that now must also be the moment to ensure the system feels fair once more.

Such a system must be understandable. It needs to treat everyone with respect, to operate with neutrality and to give people a voice.
